The Aquaculture sector is considered to be especially interesting as Peru has one of the best geographic and hydro biological conditions in the world for fish farming.
Perú is known as one of the most important fishing countries in the World and is the main producer of fishmeal and fish oil, offering the best fish food for aquaculture purposes.
Perú is also one of the 12 “mega diverse” countries in the world along with Brazil, being one of the countries with the largest number of fresh and salt water fish varieties.
Peru has good conditions for developing aquaculture and counts with saline cold waters and fresh water for the development of a variety of species, which is a major competitive advantage compared to other countries of the region.
The rainbow trout is the main specie in Peru, its quality is better than the other species farmed in other countries in the region. In addition, farming is made in shorter time (8-10 months). At the moment this specie is being exported to Norway.
Although Aquaculture still is not highly developed in Peru, the sector has high focus at the moment and is considered to present good investment opportunities.
In Peru there are 18 towns available for aquaculture purposes.
Currently there are facilities in the North West of the coast, for farming shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). The warm weather is also suitable for the farming of tilapia and scallops, while the cold water in the south of the country is most suitable for farming for instance Rainbow Trout, Native Flounder (Paralichthys adspersus) and Turbot (Psetta Maximus). In the mountain lakes, such as Lake Titicaca, there are growing productions of high-quality trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
The following species can be farmed
. Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
. Tilapia (Oreochromis spp)
. Native Flounder (Paralichthys adspersus)
. Mussels (mytilus edulis) in researching.
. Scallops (Argopecten purpuratus)
